Mali music in the 60s was strongly based upon Cuban, jazz, and traditional folk influences. The combination created unique sounds that unfortunately became increasingly suppressed as the government promoted the production of more “traditional” music in the 80s. Due to this increasingly poor economic climate, many of the musicians of this earlier music migrated to Dakar, Paris, London, Chicago, etc., where their fusion of musical styles went on to garner international attention. Demba Camara was such a celebrated singer within the “Bembeya Jazz” group; he was suspiciously killed in an automobile accident in 1973.
